
The Chinese soprano Hongping Ruan started taking piano lessons at an early age and sang in a children's choir in her hometown of Hangzhou from 2008 to 2015. From 2017 to 2019, she was trained by the Music Academy at the Klosterschule Roßleben. After graduating from high school in 2019, she pursued a degree in vocal pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. Since 2021, Hongping Ruan has been studying for a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg under Prof. Carolyn Grace James. During her time in Hamburg, she had the opportunity to work with Staatsoper Hamburg in January of 2024, debuting as Frasquita in the opera production of Carmen. Additionally, in 2023, she sang the lead role in the world premiere of the contemporary opera "Frau Kempelens Sprechmaschinen" at the HfMT Hamburg. In the fall of 2024, Hongping Ruan made her house debut at Staatsoper Hamburg, once again taking on the role of Frasquita. She performed the same role on a Carmen tour in China with Staatsoper Hamburg.
Hongping Ruan won 1. prize in the "Mozart Prize Competition 2023" of the Absalom Foundation and 2. prize in the "Elise Meyer Singing Competition 2023" of the Elise Meyer Foundation. In 2024, she also won 3. prize and a special prize for a Liedduo at the "Gustav Mahler Competition 2024" of the ROCHNA Foundation. She has also participated in various master classes with Helmut Deutsch, Anna Samuil, and Robin Guarino. At the international singing competition "Lav Mirski" 2024 in Croatia, she won 1. prize and the special prize.
Hongping Ruan regularly performs in song recitals and class concerts at the HfMT Hamburg. Additionally, Hongping Ruan receives further musical inspiration from Burkhard Kehring, Dörte Blase, Barbara Bonney, Ira Hochmann and Chris Squires.
